More Info Nakayama Masatoshi came from and old Samurai family, his father was a medical officer in the army, and it was his wish that Masatoshi followed in his footsteps. Instead Masatoshi enrolled in the Takushoku University to study the History and Language of Japan. It was here that he met Funakoshi Gichin and began training under him for four years before travelling to China in 1937. In 1946 he returned to Japan, with new ideas on the role of karate, bringing a competitive flavour to the 'sport' he formed the Japan Karate Association (JKA) in 1949. The JKA now has instructors teaching all over the world. Nakayama is renowned for his books on Shotokan Karate - click here for a sample of his "Best Karate" series |
